ABODA Vic runs Professional Development activities throughout the year for band and orchestra conductors as well as contributing to National and State Conferences. These activities comprise:
The Conducting Summer School
An intensive 7-day program of seminars, rehearsal technique workshops, conducting experience on the podium with guidance from a guest clinician, and follow-up one-on-one lessons reviewing participants' DVD footage.
Seminars
Seminars are sessions presented by local or interstate conductors & teachers. These may involve presentations & lectures, hands on workshops and the opportunity for work with a conducting mentor in front of a live ensemble. In 2010 sessions will include string ensemble conducting, beginner band instrumental techniques and score study.
Conducting Tuition at the Melbourne School Bands Festival
Every conductor at the Melbourne School Bands Festival has the opportunity for a one on one review of a video recording of their conducting with an experienced mentor immediately following their performance.
Conferences
ABODA Vic is one of a group of partner organizations who collaborate to present the biennial Sounds Great! Victorian Music Educators' Conference. At the 2009 Sounds Great! ABODA ran a conducting Master Class and a Rehearsal Techniques Workshop with Professor Craig Kirchhoff from the University of Minnesota.
